Barbara Toomey
Founding Director
Barbara K. Toomey (1937–2023) was a passionate naturalist, philanthropist, and lifelong advocate for scientific discovery. A founding director of the Toomey Foundation, Barbara pursued her love of paleontology through decades of fieldwork, fossil curation, and collaboration with the Florida Museum of Natural History. Her legacy includes hands-on expeditions, educational support, and a deeply rooted belief in curiosity, conservation, and exploration. She is remembered for her adventurous spirit, generous mentorship, and profound impact on the scientific community.
David Wilcox
Director
David Wilcox (1949–2024) was a dedicated attorney, community leader, and longtime director of the Toomey Foundation. A native Floridian and graduate of Florida State University College of Law, David served his state and community with distinction—first in public service under Governor Bob Graham, and later through over 40 years of private legal practice. Beyond his legal work, David’s passion for conservation, civic engagement, and education was evident in his leadership across numerous organizations, including the Manatee County Bar Association, the Sportsman’s National Land Trust, and the Toomey Foundation. He is remembered for his generosity, wit, and unwavering commitment to service.
